Closing Capstone & Panel Discussion: “Big Data – REALLY?”
There has been a lot of talk within healthcare in recent years on the burgeoning use of “Big Data” to improve care and solve complex operational issues in new ways. But to what extent is healthcare’s use of data really any different than in the past? Other industries — most famously retail and finance — have widely publicized their insights and innovations using diverse and complex data sources such as consumer buying behavior, socio-economics or social media. What is healthcare doing in this regard? Are we just using “big volumes” of the same old claims data, occasionally in concert with a few well-structured elements from the EMR such as lab results? Or is there real innovation going on? On the other hand, are there structural barriers to doing so? By gathering together a panel of experts in employing complex data for improving health care management and operations, we hope to tease out what is actually happening, what is potential and in process for the future, and what is simply hype. In particular, we hope to get a clearer sense of what we can realistically expect to achieve in the coming years and the value that it will provide to the industry as a whole.
